Weekly Wrap Up

Time is running out on two games
First off TMNT Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled the remake of the classic Arcade and SNES game for XBLA and PSN will be taken down on June 30.  So if you haven’t gotten around to downloading this game or were totally unaware of it you should download the trial and decide whether or not you want it quickly before time runs out.  I have the game on the SNES so I didn’t download the version on Xbox or PlayStation but now that I know it will no longer be available I might end up buying it again.  I guess I’m sentimental.  Star Wars: Galaxies an MMO for the PC is the other and will close on December 15.  I never played Galaxies so I won’t miss it like I will Re-Shelled but I know there is a large number of fans out there who will.  I guess they don’t want two Star Wars MMOs at the same time since The Old Republic is slated for this year.  Now does that mean The Old Republic will come out in the second half of December because if not a lot of fans will be too busy trying to get every last drop of enjoyment out of Galaxies to buy a new game while The Old Republic tries to get as many players as possible in order to compete with WOW.

Did we do it, did we win?
Yes we did, we won!  The Supreme Court of the United States of America rendered its verdict today on the case of Brown v. EMA which was formally known as Schwarzenegger V. EMA.  The case was about whether or not video games deserve the right to be regarded as protected speech.  Now to me this is a no-brainer, since games are an art form like movies, television, books, comics and music there is no reason that they should be protected speech and not video games.  However Leland Yee and the California government thought that violent video games should be treated as explicit content, basically Halo, Gears, COD and all other M-rated games are as bad for kids as pornography.  I’m tired of people like Yee taking shots at gaming and I am so glad that the Supreme Court did the right thing and make video games protected speech despite the fact that two of the nine judges were against it.  People need to stop blaming the game industry and retailers, they do their part by putting a big marker with what age group the game is appropriate for and what kind of content is found inside.  Retailers also ask for ID more often for games than for movies or music and ask parents if they are sure they want to buy the game for their kids.  Parents should feel obligated to take responsibility for their kids and decide what they can and can’t play with; if they don’t want to do that then they have no right to complain.

Child of Eden was released
The spiritual successor to Rez and arguably the most anticipated title to come out for Kinect yet is finally here.  Now I haven’t played this game yet but from what I’ve seen and heard the game is fantastic, also you don’t need a Kinect.  If I were to buy this game I would want a Kinect because it just seems like a really interesting experience but apparently it is a lot simpler to use the controller.  Child of Eden is a rhythm game where you are on rails blasting your way through the levels to the beat of the music.  The game is supposed to be short but highly repayable so whether to rent or buy is up to you.

Cars 2 drove into theaters
The follow-up to quite possibly my favourite Pixar movie ever is now in theatres.  I was pretty excited to see this movie because I love Pixar but I have to say that after having done so I was pretty disappointed.  I wouldn’t say that it was a bad movie but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as the original.  In my opinion if you want to see this movie just wait for it to come out on DVD, there’s no reason to rush.

2K cuts ties with Redner Group
2K Games the publisher of the recently deceased, I mean released Duke Nukem Forever has recently fired their PR firm because of something said on Twitter.  The Redner Group’s founder Jim Redner posted a message on Twitter implying that he was very upset with the not just critical but downright nasty remarks made by some reviewers in regards to DNF and would possibly deny those reviewers early access to games that The Redner Group represents from now on.  I don’t think he is a bad guy, I think he just got overly emotional and apparently miss understood 2K’s reaction to the reviews and did what he thought he had to do.  He wasn’t trying to prevent people from giving low scores but to prevent reviewers from being crass towards the games they review.  I think we have all seen some reviews that take insults too far in an attempt to be edgy or whatever and attract views.  I think it was an honest mistake and I don’t think the firm should have been fired.  Also for the record I don’t get any games early, what’s up with that 2K?

Batman: Arkham Knight Critique - Joker Story

The most compelling aspect of the story in “Batman: Arkham Knight” for me was Batman’s ongoing hallucinations of The Joker. I had heard...
