Weekly Wrap Up: Feb. 6

SSX online pass
SSX is coming out on Feb 28 and as with all EA games it will include an online pass.  Unlike with most games the online pass for SSX won’t block online play.  It will instead make it so that you can’t access any credits (in game money) used for unlocking new items when playing the “Global Events” online mode.  If you want to unlock all characters, boards or whatever unlockables are in the game you can do so by playing the online mode called “Explore”.  Meaning you’ll be able to get everything, but it would just be a lot faster if you could get points from both modes.  This is kind of weird since they aren’t limiting content at this point, which is a good thing but pretty unexpected.  They haven’t mentioned if not having the pass restricts access to DLC yet so I’ll have to wait to find out more on that.

Vita games cheaper on PSN
The Vita will be offering all of its games online through PSN at a discounted rate.  The discount is said to be at least 10%, which sounds good at first but it’s really just 3 or 4 dollars when you think about it.  With the money saved by not packaging, shipping and giving a share to retailers they could easily offer a bigger discount but it is better than nothing.  My concern with it is that the memory cards aren’t huge and if you start downloading all your games you’re probably going to need more than one.

Alan Wake on PC
Alan Wake is coming to the PC on Feb 16, a week before Alan Wake’s American Nightmare hits XBLA.  The PC version will retail for $29.99 and will include all the DLC for the game.  If you have yet to play this game and are a survival horror fan on the PC you might want to check it out.  Coming to the PC will obviously build some buzz for the new game but if the players waited for the PC version of Alan Wake they’ll do the same for the new game, so I don’t know if timing these together will boost sales that much.

Metro Last Light
Metro 2033 was a FPS from the Ukraine that came out back in 2010.  Its sequel titled Metro: Last Light was scheduled to come out sometime this year, but now it has been delayed until the first quarter of 2013.  I haven’t played 2033 but I heard it is a pretty good game and the fact that it mixes survival horror elements into the FPS genre is pretty cool.  It’s probably in the best interest of the game that it got delayed, since 2012 is looking like an awesome year for gaming and as with every delay it gives the devs more time to iron out the kinks.

Hawken news
This is a gorgeous looking indie mech combat game that I first heard of back at E3.  I haven’t heard a lot about the game since, but now we have some big news.  The first piece of news is the release date of Dec 12, which unfortunately is pretty far away.  The second piece of news is that the game will be free-to-play.  I’m pretty surprised that the game is going with this sort of payment model.  Since the game is only multiplayer the fact that people will be buying better upgrades is pretty messed up in my opinion.  I’m not a fan of micro-transactions but at least in a lot of those games the stuff you buy just makes it easier for you to get through the game instead of making it more difficult for other players who aren’t willing to spend as much on the game as you.

The most compelling aspect of the story in “Batman: Arkham Knight” for me was Batman’s ongoing hallucinations of The Joker. I had heard...
