Gamescom
One
of the most significant gaming conventions, often referred to as Europe’s E3, Gamescom
occurred last week and with it came a slew of new trailers and details on
upcoming games. There are so many
headlines to get to so I’m going to make this a 2 part WWU. I’ll also try to get right to the facts
quickly on some of the headlines because I don’t have much to say and all of
them and there are so many headlines I don’t want to bog anyone down to much
(it also makes it easier for me to write).
Try to
remember this
To kick things off with a bang Capcom unveiled its new IP from a studio named DONTNOD that was formed back in 2008. I can’t remember the last time I was so excited
for a company’s first game. The game was
initially announced last year at Gamescom
under the name Adrift, but is now
called Remember Me and has some
impressive footage to show-off. The game
comes out in May of 2013 and I can’t wait, so checkout the trailers and get as
pumped for this game as I am!

1313 trailer
A new trailer for Star Wars 1313 was shown off which
covers the level on display at E3 in
a much more cinematic way with a lot of clips that weren’t present in either of
the past gameplay presentations. This is
another game that I am definitely looking forward to. On a bit of a tangent, does anyone else think
that this is going to be a Boba Fett
game? It was revealed earlier that the
characters shown off at E3 were
stand-ins, which are the same character models shown here, because they didn’t
want to show off the actual characters.
Why would you hide characters if they aren’t recognizable, right? So it has to be a pre-existing character and
thus Boba Fett the bounty who used 1313 as an alias has to be who they are
hiding, doesn’t he?
DMC Vergil
trailer
The new Devil
May Cry game form Ninja Theory
has been looking great so far and the latest trailer is no different. Vergil,
Dante’s twin brother who had been an
enemy of his in the previous series, is now attempting to work alongside Dante in order to take down the demon’s controlling
their world. The change to Vergil’s personality, taking a guy who
despised humanity in the previous series and make him want to save it in this
one, has upset some fans, but I think it is awesome. Hopefully there will be a few instances where
we actually get to step into the shoes of Vergil
to switch things up a bit.
Tearaway
Tearaway
is a platformer by Media Molecule,
the makers of Little Big Planet. It seems to use just about all of the Vita’s functionalities in interesting
and engaging ways, which is exactly what I want from games on the Vita.
Also the art direction is superb and quite frankly it is the first game
to make me consider a Vita since Gravity Rush.
Resident
Evil 6
When Resident Evil 6 launches so will a site called ResidentEvil.net that will be meant for tracking player stats and
making them easily accessible to those playing, much like what Bungie.net did for Halo and what Call of Duty Elite
is currently doing for MW3. Aside from logging your high scores in Mercenaries and how accurate you are
with each type of weapon, it will be used to coordinate special events pitting
players against one another in order to win prizes in the form of RE.net points that can be used to
purchase in-game items like costumes or perhaps other playable characters in
certain modes. There will also be championship
belts awarded (not real ones) to players who win the events that will then have
to be defended. It all sounds like a
great way to bring the community together and keep people coming back. I know I’m going to try my best to win me one
of those titles, even if my chances are slim.
There is also a new trailer for the game.
Dead Space 3
release date and more
Dead
Space 3 will be available on February 5 2013. The limited edition will include two “bundles”
titled First Contact and Witness the Truth, which both contain a
new suit and weapon. There will also be
a new weapon creation feature in the game that allows you to create new weapons
out of parts you find around the environment.
There are also two new trailers: the first really shows off the horror
vibe that is still prominent in Dead
Space 3 and the second details the new weapon
bench for customization.

Do you
remember Wonderbook
Wonderbook
the new game peripheral (peripheral feels right doesn’t it, haven’t heard
anyone refer to it as one yet but I’m going to start) for PS3 had some new game announcements. Diggs
Nightcrawler is a game about a detective trying to solve crimes committed
in children’s stories, like the murder of Humpty
Dumpty for example. The other
announcements are that they are partnered with BBC to make a game based on Walking
with Dinosaurs and a partnership with Disney
who I’m sure could make any number of games based off of their countless
children’s classics.
AC3 new
naval trailer
Assassin’s
Creed 3, much like 1313 released
a flashy trailer showing off much of what we saw at E3 and adding some new bits to it.
They chose to focus only on the naval aspect, which makes me wonder just
how often we will be going out to sea.
Killzone
Mercenary
Killzone
is coming to Vita. In the game you are no longer apart of the ISA, instead you play a mercenary who assists
both the ISA and the Helghast depending on who is offering to
pay them. It is an interesting
opportunity to show both sides of the war and hopefully they won’t just paint
the ISA as the good guy missions and
the Helghast missions as the bad
ones, so that there can actually be something interesting to the story and have
it impact your view of previous titles. Also
I hope it is a better game than Killzone 3 although I highly doubt it will be.
Black Ops Declassified
The game will be out some time in
November and there will be a bundle released that includes it and the Vita, which is kind of poor timing since
there will be a bundle for Assassin’s
Creed Liberations in October. Also someone
needs to teach these guys the meaning of the word covert, watch the video and
you’ll get what I mean.
Ratchet
& Clank: Full Frontal Assault
Another Ratchet & Clank game is on the way. It will be available for both the PS3 and Vita, will support Cross Play
and Cross Buy (which I will get too
shortly).
Sly Cooper Thieves
in Time
Sly
Cooper 4 is coming out early 2013 and will also support Cross Play and Cross Buy. You can also use
the Vita in combination with the PS3 in order to find secret items, which
actually seems like a more obtuse version of the Wii U.
PlayStation
All-Stars Battle Royale gets new characters
Four new characters were announced for
PSASBR: Dante (from DMC not Devil May Cry, shut up fanboys it isn’t
a big deal), Ratchet (and Clank), Sackboy and Spike (from Ape Escape). The game has already been said to use Cross Play plus you can use the Vita as a controller on your PS3 and now we have learned that it will
support Cross Buy as well.
Cross Buy
Alright I’ve finally gotten to
it. Cross
Buy is a pretty amazing promotional strategy that Sony has come up with to try and motivate people to get a Vita.
If you buy a game on the PS3
that supports Cross Buy (so far none
are available and Sly 4, the new Ratchet & Clank and PSASBR are the only ones on the way)
then you get the Vita version for
free. That way you already have 3 Vita games just from buying PS3 games, thus motivating you to put
them to use by purchasing a Vita. I was pretty shocked to hear this, I mean I
felt bundling the Vita and PS3 versions together at a discount like
what is done with Blu-rays and DVDs was a no brainer, but giving the Vita version out for free totally caught
me off guard. Everyone is pretty excited
about this, but what no one is bringing up is that the deal largely depends on
whether or not you get the actual cartridge.
Bundling in the physical media costs them more than just giving a code,
so it would make since that they just pack in a download code. Now what that really means is that Sony is freaking brilliant because the
games aren’t free for consumers, people just think they are. When they are charging a minimum of $20 for
4GB up to $100 for 32GB that is all proprietary and then making you download
these ‘free’ games that could potentially take up to 3GB like Uncharted: Golden Abyss does then you
are buying either larger or more memory cards than you originally would have,
so Sony still finds a way to get your
money. Now I’m not saying that this is
terrible, since even if you had to buy another 4GB memory card every time you
get one of these Cross Buy games it
would still save you half the price of actually buying the game separately, I’m
just pointing out that it isn’t as gracious and spectacular of Sony as many believe it to be.
